Floor heating guide

Which floors and furniture work with floor heating?

Short answer

Tile and natural stone work best because they pass heat easily. Engineered wood, laminate and vinyl work when the product is rated for floor heating. Thick carpet with a heavy underlay is the least suitable, because it insulates the floor from the room.

Floor finishes

  • Tile, porcelain, marble and stone: the best match. They conduct heat well and store it.
  • Engineered wood: works well; choose a product rated for floor heating and let the screed dry fully first.
  • Solid wood: possible with care: thin boards, stable species, and a limit on surface temperature.
  • Laminate and vinyl: fine when the maker rates them for floor heating, usually with a maximum surface temperature.
  • Thick carpet and underlay: least suitable. Keep the combined thermal resistance low or choose a thinner carpet.

Furniture

Furniture on legs is no problem. Avoid large items that sit flat on the floor and trap heat: beds with a solid base, floor cushions, and large rugs with thick backing. Plan these spots in the layout so the room still heats evenly.

Where not to put underfloor heating

Pipe is not laid under fixed kitchen units, built-in wardrobes, bathtubs or shower trays, or where you will fix things into the floor. A good layout leaves these areas out from the start, which also saves material.
